Under Fear or Faith?

With many videos, posts and articles going viral, there is a lot of speculation, confusion, exposure and discrediting, removal of videos; social media is filled with controversy regarding the coronavirus. What is truth and what is fiction? Does anyone even know? Who is trustworthy? Who can you believe?

I am not above the struggle of fear and doubt. I teeter back and forth and even fall on the side of fear. But as the waves of uncertainty crash around us it’s important to remember that none of the present circumstances are beyond the knowledge and control of God’s hand and no one is too far gone or falls outside the realm of His mercy and grace.

Getting stuck in the discouraging trend of social media and politics has never been easier. We have access to it on every device. Notifications pop up in our face, every news channel plays clips continuously, it scrolls across our screens, debacle or debunkle. For me, it’s more discouraging seeing the effects this situation has on the world: the economy, education system, health system, and our freedoms.

We underestimate the influence of the constant rambling of our inner voice. Oh, how loud it is—the loudest of voices, as it beckons us into its deep pit of fear, anxiety and despair. We watch as our mind creates a grim future. We internally predict what could be or won’t be. We are monopolized by our own picture of a future we don’t even know.

But have faith.

No matter which side of the fence you fall—or perhaps you’re on neither side—we can be encouraged that GOD is still on the throne and He is still working.

Our fear of the situation does not change His power! The worry of our needs being met does not change His love for us! Our fear of the future does not change His plan! He is still working for our good and His glory. He is still fighting for the souls of men, “not wishing any should perish but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9)!

We do not have power to change all situations, though society loves to inform us that we are our own limitations. Dream it and you can achieve it, as many slogans read. But we can change our perspective. We can neutralize the effects of our noisy inner voice that’s full of fear and doubt. We can stand up against its powerful strikes. And we must.

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…” 2 Corinthians 10:5 reads.

Years ago, Billy Graham said in one of his sermons: Habakkuk said, “Lord please tell me what You’re doing.” And God said, “No, I’m not going to tell you Habakkuk because if I told you what I was doing you wouldn’t believe it.” If God today told us what He’s doing in the world we wouldn’t believe it. Don’t you think God’s given up and God’s abdicated, and God’s left the throne…He hasn’t. He’s still on the throne and those of us that know Him put our trust in Him and Him alone. I don’t put my trust in Washington. I don’t put my trust in the United Nations. I don’t put trust in myself. I don’t put trust in my money. I put my trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. When all the rest of it fails and crumbles and shatters, He’ll be there.

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving (Colossians 4:1).

All fear is unwarranted. Easier said than believed, I know. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9). Look at the sky. Just as the sun is always shining behind the clouds, God remains steadfast despite the darkest clouds of trial and tribulation. When we get scared it’s because we lose sight of God behind the dark clouds in front of us.

Let’s be honest, our current situation isn’t about the covid-19. It’s not even about a virus at all. It’s not about the world, the government or even you and me. How can I say that? Because this whole situation is about God and Him alone. That’s all it’s ever been about. From the beginning, it’s been about Him. Our time on earth is not even ours.

It’s about our love for God. It’s about giving God all glory and honor in whatever we do. It’s about growing in our faith and our relationship with God. It’s about living a godly example and sharing the good news of the gospel with everyone around us…no matter the circumstances or situations.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling (Psalm 46:1-3).

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

So, come hail or high water–or perhaps a virus and threatened economy–what are we doing to further His kingdom?
